Insurers laboratory (UL) is a science company global security and the largest and oldest independent testing laboratory in the United States. Underwriters laboratories tests of the latest products and technologies for safety before they are sold around the world. It checks every year more than 19 000 different products, ranging from consumer electronics, alarm and security equipment, lasers, medical equipment and robotics.
Founded in 1894, which means it has more than 120 years of service and experience of Underwriters laboratories offers its services in five strategic areas, from product safety, environment, life and health, University and verification.

The underwriters laboratories is a non-profit organization that is funded through expense charges manufacturers of products submitted for certification. Ul charge fees to process the initial evaluation, as well as the constant maintenance fee for service.
Operations at UL, are global in scope, with customers in 102 countries. In 2009, 20 billion ul marks appeared on products, while the 1.5 billion consumers in Asia, Europe and North America amounted to ul with safety messages.
The history of underwriters laboratories
The beginning of the underwriters laboratories, can be traced to a massive world exhibition, held in Chicago in 1890. At the fair, ul founder William Henry Merrill, Jr., a graduate of mit’s electrical engineering program, and worked in a mandated position with the Boston Board of fire underwriters to assess the risk of fire with all the new construction going on at the Fairgrounds. At the fair, Merrill, Jr. meets with many insurers and offers his idea to create a laboratory electrical testing. Insurers agree that it is a good idea, and as a Western Union insurance and the Chicago Association of insurers give Merrill, financing, Jr. to form what would soon become the Underwriters electrical Bureau.
In the end, that first Office became the electrical Bureau of the National Board of fire Underwriters. He established his mission, even then, ensuring a safe work environment and life for people. In 1895, the organization hired its first employees. The office was officially operating with three employees and a budget of $ 3,000 annually. In 1901, the organization officially became underwriters laboratories and established a headquarters in Illinois. Founder Merril, Jr. became the leader of the UL and the new President, Henry clay, Eddie was named. In 1903, Eid began to create his first set of security standards, starting with tin clad fire doors.
